Herbal Depression Remedies

Depression is experienced by every individual at one time or another. Depression can become a significant problem however, if the issue lasts for an extended period of time or frequently occurs again and again. Today’s teens sometimes identify children with serious depression related issues as emotional or “emo.” While the latter reference is an act of general stereotyping and is sometimes used as a playful reference, there is nothing humorous or fun about real depression-related emotions.
A depressive disorder is considered a unipolar disorder; the latter disorder only goes into one spectrum of emotion whereas someone with bipolar disorder may have emotional swings in depression and/or elation. Depression is characterized as being down, sad, feeling helpless, acting lethargic, and sometimes depression is accompanied by bodily aches and pains as well. Depression is sometimes associated with irritability and stress. A depressed individual may suddenly and abruptly lose interest in his or her pastimes, relationships, and appearance. Appetite changes are sometimes noted, and depression can affect one’s ability to get adequate sleep. Finally, some people suffering from severe or major depression have suicidal thoughts: these thoughts should never be ignored and should be dealt with immediately.
When an individual is depressed, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the individual is suffering from depression, but could be suffering from other mood disorders instead. A qualified professional will need to be consulted in order to determine what the cause of depression is and how it should be treated. An individual suffering from depression will definitely want to seek out counseling services. A counselor can help in identifying the source/cause of depressive episodes and may recommend potential treatments.
Some medications like antidepressants are offered to those suffering from depression in order to rebalance the chemical imbalances believed to be responsible for depressive episodes. The use of medications is always backed by quality counseling services. Continued counseling can act as a gauge for monitoring one’s treatment as well as one’s mood. Natural methods for treating depression should supplement counseling and medication use; getting adequate sleep, eating a healthy diet and exercising are very much needed activities for the individuals suffering from depression.
For individuals suffering from depression, drinking alcoholic beverages is not recommended. Alcohol is a depressant and can worsen one’s condition when it comes to dealing with depression. Caffeine should also be limited as a “caffeine crash” may incite a depressive episode. When a teen is dealing with depression, it is also good to be around friends that are willing to listen and talk about it. Just getting problems out in the open can prove tremendously relieving for those suffering from depression.
If suicidal ideation becomes an issue in a teen, the proper authorities should be notified. There are hotlines that can be called as well in such instances; if someone threatens to commit suicide, it is never a good idea to ignore such a threat. It is imperative that a person suffering from severe depression get the treatment that he or she requires.
